Church in Thyatira – Deceived

In the beginning of this letter, Jesus acknowledges and commends the church for their acts of service. Their love and faith had encouraged a growth in outreach. This is a very important quality for the Christian church. By serving others we can allow God’s light to shine through us, reaching people during dark times. These acts of service are meant to be a demonstration of Christ’s love, compassion, and grace.

I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

Revelation 2:19

But things aren’t always as they seem. As we become more active in the church, we must be careful not to neglect our quiet time with God. Reading our Bibles and praying regularly connects us directly to God. As our busy schedules lessen our time, we begin to rely more heavily on our religious leaders. This reliance on human leaders potentially places us in danger of being misled. Thats why we need to be careful who we choose to follow. Following the wrong leader will only lead us away from God. This is what happened in Thyatira.

Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.  I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.

Revelation 2:20-21

If we are not personally connected to God we can become easy prey to deceptive leaders. These charismatic leaders seem to speak for God, and we may not even realize that we’re no longer hearing God’s voice. Jesus warned his followers about these deceivers.

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

Matthew 7:15

Additionally, there are numerous scriptures in the New Testament address this same subject.

So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

even more active than they were in the beginning. activity of the church.Since the days of the early church, one of the greatest threats to Christianity has been, and continues to be, false doctrine. Even before Jesus’ death and resurrection, he was already warning his followers to be on guard so they would not be led astray.
