Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults;Proverbs 9:7-9
whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.
Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you;
rebuke the wise and they will love you.
Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still;
teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.
Both the intent and its application to our lives today is more readily seen through The Message translation:
If you reason with an arrogant cynic, you’ll get slapped in the face;
confront bad behavior and get a kick in the shins.
So don’t waste your time on a scoffer;
all you’ll get for your pains is abuse.
But if you correct those who care about life,
that’s different—they’ll love you for it!
Save your breath for the wise—they’ll be wiser for it;
tell good people what you know—they’ll profit from it.
Skilled living gets its start in the Fear-of-God,
insight into life from knowing a Holy God.
It’s through me, Lady Wisdom, that your life deepens,
and the years of your life ripen.
Live wisely and wisdom will permeate your life;
mock life and life will mock you.
These verses stuck in my mind after the events at our nation’s capital unfolded yesterday. It can be hard to understand why some people are unable to see the truth. This verse explains that some people don’t want to see the truth. We should not waste our time trying to convince these people of the truth because there are none so blind as those who won’t see.
You will be ever hearing, but never understanding; you will be ever seeing, but never perceiving. This people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyesIsaiah 6:9-10
We only frustrate ourselves when we attempt to change the view of someone who has already made up their mind. Instead, our responsibility to is share the truth with those who are searching for it. Our words may be able to make a difference in these people’s lives. Those searching for wisdom and truth will find it. Either way, the truth will always have its day.
