Choice

Above all else, guard your heart,
    for everything you do flows from it.
Keep your mouth free of perversity;
    keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
Let your eyes look straight ahead;
    fix your gaze directly before you.

Give careful thought to the paths for your feet
    and be steadfast in all your ways.

Proverbs 4:23-26

These verses remind me that what I do has a direct impact on my heart. Likewise, what is in my heart will be expressed in what I do. It’s an intricate relationship. This is why it is so important to guard our hearts and not allow open accessibility to it. I must be careful and deliberate in my choices so that my heart is not influenced by the wrong things. If I surround myself with negativity and cynicism these attitudes will be reflected in what I do and say. If I surround myself with friends who don’t share my values I will no doubt find myself changing. If I am watching ungodly programming how might that affect the words I say and my attitude towards others? This is why it is important to know who I want to be and to keep my eyes fixed on the path that will lead me there. If I am busy looking at the world and its values I will stray from this path, becoming a person I never wanted to be.
